How can I use my inter-grated web cam to record video(Dell inspiron).?

I cant figure out how to use my inter-grated webcam as a stand alone video Recorder. It only work with programs such as yahoo messenger. I need to record a video for a class project that is already past due. So the first best answer will receive a best answer vote. Thanx|||with a softwear
