How common was inter-racial mixing between native american and whites in the 17 and 1800's?

I'm reading a fiction novel where a white woman marries a native american. It was set in the late 1700s, and I'm just wondering if that was even heard of in those days? White people didn't seem too accepting of anyone outside of their race back then so this seems a little unlikely.

Some of it was forced mixing between white frontiersman and native women. However, there were cases of cohabitation. I doubt that they considered the native women as equal as a white woman. After all natives were not considered legal citizens and were viewed as heathens.





The situation of native women were similar to black women during that time. There was no legal stance such as marriage. If it did happen it was very very very rare and only probably recognized only in certain areas or towns.|||The traders and frontiersmen actually did a fair amount of it. Remember that they were away from their own 'kind' in women for months if not years at a time. Many Mountain Men took Native American wives and some were even adopted into Indian tribes. It certainly didn't happen on the East coast or in the towns, but a lot out in the wilderness. Sometimes there were raids on settlements and the women were taken to be slaves in the tribes. Some of these women adopted will to tribal life and became actual wives of either their captors or some other brave in the tribe. It happened, more often than many like to think.|||it was a little common because they raped the women.but they were still slaves so it was very unoften.black people are more highly mixed with white people than native americans because they basically killed all of them natives so they could have the land so it was no native women too rape.almost all black people are mixed with white(from rape) but i know a white racist person doesn't want to hear that.but it was mostly african americans and native americans that got together and had babies.not white and natives|||On the contrary,why do you think there are so many shades of black people? most of the mixing was white men either marrying or raping indian women. only rarely was there a white woman who married an indian man simply because if you remember white women were considered the property of their fathers and then their husbands so they didn't have a lot of say in things . especially if it was something as looked down on as having a indian man!





there are times within my own nation where captives were adopted into the tribe. even when ransoms were paid, many of them willingly stayed with us because in our traditions women are honored and have power equal and in some instances greater than the men. i guess they liked the freedom we offered them and didn't want to go back to being considered property again.|||Of course they were not ACCEPTING of them, thats why they nearly wiped them out into extinction!!!!!!! But what is equally hypocritical and idiotic about the filthy euro trash that conquered this country is that, they felt the natives were savages. Too savage to deserve to live, oh, but not savage enough for them to BOINK THEM!





White people did this to blacks too. ' Oh you cannot drink out of OUR water fountains or go to OUR schools, but take your clothes off so I can have sex with you!'

My most recent ex who's white has some Native American ancestry on his grandmother's side. Blacks, whites and natives mixed back then.|||I think it was mostly white men and native american women IMO
